Long Marton

Community School

Links with community groups

In line with the school's name, we take our role as part of the community seriously. In addition to the events we organise, we work closely with other community organisations to provide opportunities for our students eg. Long Marton Village Hall, Long Marton History group. One group we have a close engagement with is the Rotary Club.

An annual event on the school's calendar (much looked-forward-to by the children) is the Swimathon at Penrith Leisure Centre, organised by the Rotary Club of Penrith. Teams are challenged to swim as many lengths as possible  within 50 minutes in relay, with our current school record standing at 111. Our participation in this event has grown year on year, starting with three children and two adults progressing to this year's 19 children in three teams.

We also enter the Rotary Club of Appleby's Young Writer and Young Artist competitions, which feed into regional events. Children are invited to put work forward, which receives detailed critical and helpful feedback. As a way to showcase work outside school, along with Dufton Show, this is a valued opportunity for our children.

Each summer, we enter a team into the Rotary Club of Appleby's annual 4K fun run which raises funds through sponsorship. With our Helm Wind Run and after-school club, running is a sport that we value within school as both an individual and team event.

For the last decade, we have hosted the area chess tournament. This is an event we have won for the last eight years, with older children teaching younger children to play within school - both at wet play-times and outside on our giant chess set. This shield was donated in 2000 by the Rotary Club of Appleby.
